29 January–2 February 2017
***Applications for this program closed***
Mathematics is an ancient and beautiful subject that is an essential part of our modern day civilization. While some people might not always appreciate its beauty, those who do are rewarded by the mental pleasure of understanding elegant facts and connections between mathematical objects, as well as the technical skills and problem solving abilities which will enable them to stand out and thrive in a diverse range of crucial careers.
The aim of the Math Olympiad Camp is to provide committed and math-enthusiastic talented students in Qatar the chance to take their talents to the next level by training them on a higher level of problem in the spirit of the International Math Olympiad (IMO). The IMO is one of the oldest and most prestigious international maths competitions for high school students. It is held annually and hosted each time by a different country, offering a great opportunity for the creative exchange of experiences and ideas among high school students from many different countries and cultural backgrounds. The underlying principle of the competition is that the tasks don’t require advanced mathematical knowledge but rather sophisticated and versatile ways of thinking in order to solve them.
The Math Olympiad Camp will be hosted at Texas A&M University at Qatar from 29 Jan.–2 Feb. 2017, Sunday through Thursday, from 8:45 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. It will comprise of lectures and training sessions which will be held by a team of German experts with vast majority with the IMO as well as Math professors from Texas A&M University at Qatar (TAMUQ). The working language of the camp is English, however Arabic, French and German assistance and translation will be provided whenever needed. We encourage both middle and high school students from any schools in Qatar to apply for the camp by submitting the application form and attaching their solutions (to as many problems as they can) of the problem set. The targeted age range is 14-16 for the students, although exceptions can be made in cases of outstanding merit. Furthermore, we offer about six slots for teachers interested in developing their skills in teaching and solving advanced problems. This week-long interaction between students, trainers, teachers and university professors will be a significant cornerstone on which further mathematical and scientific activities can be carried out throughout the year. All participants who conclude the full program will receive certificates. This is also a great asset for students to include in their résumés.
Application decisions will be made by 15 Jan. Successful applicants must submit a signed program authorization by 20 Jan. to be eligible for participation. Snacks, beverages and lunch will be provided to all participants.
The Math Olympiad Camp is a project of the Working Group “Arab and German Education” of the Arab-German Young Academy of Sciences and Humanities (AGYA) and is hosted by Texas A&M University at Qatar (TAMUQ).
AGYA brings together excellent German-Arab scholars to face shared challenges and develop solutions through research cooperation. The Math Olympiad Camp is initiated and organized by AGYA Member Ahmad El-Guindy together with his fellow colleagues Maha Al-Hendawi, Laith Al-Shawaf and Kalman Graffi.
